Since we just recorded a Shouts From the Back Row podcast on our favourite character actors, a.k.a. “That Guys”, “Before They Were Stars” will temporarily be changing its name to “Before They Were ‘That Guys'” this week, in order to showcase how some of our most prominent character actors started their careers. One name that was mentioned frequently on our podcast was Brian Cox, an actor who has seemingly appeared in every other movie that’s been released within the last decade. Today, I shall be travelling all the way back to 1968 to showcase a 22-year old Brian Cox in one of his earliest roles: a BBC production of a television play with the very memorable title, The Year of the Sex Olympics. Written by Nigel Kneale, this play does have a lot of interesting historical significance as its storyline revolves a futuristic society where a television program is produced about a group of people being forced to fend for themselves on a remote island. Yes, it appears we might have Nigel Kneale to thank for inspiring shows like Survivor and Big Brother and reality TV in general.
