I’m a very big fan of Everything Is Illuminated, the film based on Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, and though I haven’t read any of Foer’s work, Everything Is Illuminated was so awesome that I’ve been pretty interested in this new adaptation of one of Foer’s books: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I didn’t know anything about the story of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close until I saw this trailer, however, and now that I have…well, I’m still looking forward to the movie, even if it looks like total Oscar bait, but more interestingly, the plot of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close bears a certain resemblance to that of Everything Is Illuminated. Both feature young male protagonists with unique views of the world, obsessed with objects, who begin to explore their families’ pasts following the death of a relative. These journeys, of course, rapidly become ones of self-discovery. Let me reiterate, though, that this isn’t a complaint, just an observation – one that reveals a bit about the interests and issues of Jonathan Safran Foer.

Will you being seeing Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close? Or is it too heart-wrenchingly Oscar-baity for your tastes?

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close comes out in limited release on December 25, 2011, and will spread out from there.
