Most people associate Ralph Macchio with Daniel-san from the Karate Kid movies first and foremost, but me? I always associate him with his role as Bill Gambini from My Cousin Vinny, because My Cousin Vinny is just a straight-up terrific movie. Macchio got his start acting in commercials for Bubble Yum and Dr. Pepper, and caught his first big-screen break with a role in The Outsiders, starring alongside many future big-shot celebs such as C. Thomas Howell, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, and Matt Dillon. The following year, Macchio landed the lead role in The Karate Kid and his popularity skyrocketted with the success of that film. In the early 90’s, following his roles in My Cousin Vinny and Naked in New York, Macchio took some time off from acting, but continues to make cameos and appearences in film and television. One of his more notable appearences in recent years was as a competitor on the twelfth season of Dancing With the Stars. He turns 50 today, and in doing so has made me feel really, really old.
