Weezer’s New Album Is Oddly Hugo-Centric

hurley

The Beatles had The White Album, Jay-Z had The Black Album, and now Weezer has The Hurley Album. That’s right, the image above is the actual cover of Weezer’s newest album, featuring nothing but the grinning face of Jorge Garcia. Yep. Not even the title is displayed, just pure, unadulterated Hurley. When asked about the decision to dedicate the album cover to Lost‘s most beloved character (yeah, yeah, I know that Sawyer and Locke are probably more popular, but nobody’s more loveable than ol’Hugo), Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo said the following:

“I was coming up with all kinds of stuff, but ultimately, we just went with some random word that doesn’t really have anything to do with anything. I just loved this photo of Jorge Garcia — it just had this amazing vibe. We didn’t want to do a fourth self-titled record and we knew people would refer to it as ‘the Hurley record’ even if we left it without that title, so we just called it ‘Hurley.’ No words are on the cover because all we wanted was his amazing face.”

I guess that makes sense. Weezer has always been known for being a little nerdy, so a Lost shout-out isn’t that big of a surprise, I suppose. I hope they make this a trend and feature a random celebrity’s face on the cover of each of their subsequent albums. My vote for their next one? BRUCE CAMPBELL.
