Two of my favourite classic science fiction horror films – The Thing and Alien – are getting modern prequels. In the case of The Thing, John Carpenter isn’t even involved (and I am therefore skeptical as to how good it will be), but when it comes to the Alien prequels, at least Ridley Scott is at the helm. While I haven’t been a very big fan of Scott’s more recent movies, it will be nice to see him returning to the genre that made him famous in the first place, and who knows – maybe the films will actually be decent. In a recent interview with The Independant, Scott spoke briefly about his plans for the prequels, and the most interesting quote is by far the following:
“The film will be really tough, really nasty […] It’s the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?”
Apparently the prequels will take place 30 years before the events of the first Alien movie, will be shot in 3D, and will be written by LOST co-creator Damon Lindoff. Could be fun. I’ll be keeping a wary eye on these projects…
