Let’s Take Another Look At The Trailer For Super 8

This trailer for the upcoming J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg collaboration Super 8 was revealed in May of this year, but I thought that it might be fun to take another look at it, as Den of Geek is reporting that shooting for Super 8 is finally underway. Oh, J.J. Abrams. You sure know how to create intrigue. Personally, I think Abrams is much better at making movies than he is at creating television shows. When it comes to TV, it seems like his shows (Lost, in particular) start to run out of steam because old J.J. just can’t find good enough reasons to keep the answers to the questions he’s posing hidden from the audience for any extended period of time. But with movies he doesn’t have to worry about that. He can build intrigue leading up to the movie’s release, and the movie itself is the answer to any questions being posed. Cloverfield is a perfect example of this, since the trailers barely told you anything, the viral marketing hinted at what you might see in the film without telling you anything directly, and even the title of the movie was kept a secret for a long time. Now Abrams is trying to replicate that intrigue with Super 8. This trailer only really tells you the bare bones of the movie: an alien being transported by train escapes and starts destroying things. And something about a Super 8 handheld film camera. That’s it. I, for one, will be lining up to see this when it comes out next summer.
