Alejandro Jodorowsky and the L’Incal Series

Alejandro Jodorowsky, the Chilean acid Western director of cult favourites El Topo and Holy Mountain, collaborated with famous comic book artist Moebius in the ’80s and beyond to create one of the most memorable science fiction comic series ever conceived: the infamous L’Incal series. Humanoid/DC Comics recently recoloured most of the installments of the series, heavily censoring the naughty bits that defined the original prints. If you want the authentic, uncensored originals, however, it’s best to read the series en français and consult Epic Comics, who helmed the publication of the original issues. The universe that Jodorowsky created with this series affectionately earned the title of the “Jodoverse,” and has had a profound effect on both film and literature. In fact, Jodorowsky and Moebius sued the director of The Fifth Element because he apparently borrowed too much of the series’ content. Now that I think about it, Luc Besson plagiarized Heavy Metal in that movie too…oh well, The Fifth Element is still awesome (and Gary Oldman plays such a memorable role in the film!). Anyway, I haven’t tracked down the original issues of L’Incal just yet, but they shouldn’t be too hard to find in this online world of ours. If the snippets that I’ve encountered and the awesome covers I’ve seen are any indication of the content (sometimes you CAN judge a book by its cover!!), then we’re certainly in for a treat. Check it out!
