To celebrate Jason Lee’s birthday today, I’m going to take you back to 1991 when Jason was a very prominent professional skateboarder and the possibility of being an actor had not yet crossed his mind. This clip is from a skateboarding video called Video Days, which is apparently considered to be “the Citizen Kane of skateboarding videos”. Video Days is notable not only for showcasing Jason Lee’s immense talents on the skateboard, but also for being the very first directing job of Spike Jonze! Anyway, you’ll see Jason break into an impromptu song near the end of this clip and, apparently, this is what compelled Kevin Smith to cast him in Mallrats and jumpstart his acting career.
