Can Ironclad’s Cast Save It From Stupidity?

So how’s this for an awesome cast: Paul Giamatti, James Purefoy, Robert Carlyle, Jason Flemyng, Brian Cox, Bob Hoskins and the late, great Pete Postlethwaite. It’s like a who’s who of character actors! Unfortunately, the trailer for Ironclad has left a lot to be desired. There’s plenty of cool medieval action, sure, but beyond the basic plot that’s thrown at us in the title cards, I just didn’t feel like this preview gave me enough to hook me. Did anyone watching this trailer know that the film was about the Knights Templar? That’s a pretty awesome detail that got left out. And they don’t even list half of all the awesome actors in this! One would think they’d at least try to generate a little publicity by including Pete Postlethwaite’s name, seeing as it was one of his final films and all. On top of all that, it’s directed by a guy named Jonathan English, which just reminds me of that lame Rowan Atkinson movie, and the trailer rapidly descends into shakey shot upon shakey shot of people yelling and bleeding. All in all, I’m not convinced it will be particularly good, but the cast alone is reason enough to check this out at some point.

Ironclad comes out July 8, 2011.
