Let’s take a trip

Ever wonder what it’s like to drop acid? Look no further. In 1964, Ken Kesey, celebrated author of “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, took a mythical excursion across America from the West to the East Coast.

It’s a match made in heaven! Alex Gibney, director of Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson (one of my favourite documentaries in recent years about one of my favourite authors), has made a documentary about another one of my favourite figures from the same era: Ken Kesey! The documentary Magic Trip: Ken Kesey’s Search for a Cool Place chronicles Kesey and the Merry Pranksters’ cross-country roadtrip to the New York World’s Fair in 1964, and is comprised largely of footage that Kesey himself shot! If you’ve ever read The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe, then you should definitely look into this, because it promises to be the perfect companion piece.

Magic Trip hits limited theatres August 5, 2011.
