Before They Were Stars: Three-Week Old Sofia Coppola Gets Baptized in “The Godfather”

Well, I think it’s safe to say that this is the youngest version of “Before They Were Stars” I’ve ever done. I’m sure most of you have already seen the famous baptism sequence from The Godfather, one of the greatest sequences in all of cinema, but did you know that little baby being baptized is a future Academy Award winner? When she was only three weeks old, Francis Ford Coppola decided to use his daughter, Sofia, in the role of Michael Corleone’s godson (yes, son!), which is quite an early initation into filmmaking for someone who would later become a very successful director herself. This is such a cheap, obvious joke, but I’m going to make it anyway… Sofia Coppola’s peformance as a baby in this scene is better than her entire performance in The Godfather Part III! ZING!
