Today is the birthday of the late, great John Cazale, one of the only actors out there whom you could honestly say had a perfect, absolutely flawless filmography. Anyway, HBO produced this great 40-minute documentary about him entitled I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale, which features a plethora of renowned A-list actors and filmmakers talking about his life and influence. The opening sequence perfectly conveys the life of a character actor/”That Guy” as the filmmakers show John Cazale’s picture to random people on the street and though many of them recognize him as “that guy who played Fredo in The Godfather“, nobody actually seems to know his name! Not only was he a terrific actor, but it sounds like he was a terrific person as well and if he had not passed away so soon, I’m sure he would be looked upon today as one of the all-time greatest.
