Today we celebrate the birthday of another famous “That Guy” – the one, the only Bob Balaban (accept no substitutes). Bob has been a heavy-hitter in the world of character actors since very early in his career, when he had a large supporting role in a little movie called Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Since then, Bob has expanded his filmography by leaps and bounds, appearing in such films as Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, Ghost World, Gosford Park, The Majestic, 2010 and Capote. But I think we can all agree that there is no greater Bob Balaban movie than Altered States, because a film where William Hurt takes lots of LSD and turns into a caveman is just frigging awesome. Balaban turns 66 today.
