This new promo spot for the prequel to the 1982 John Carpenteer film The Thing (itself a remake), confusingly also titled The Thing, shows a bit more of the alien entity than fans of Carpenter’s film might enjoy. Part of what made The Thing from ’82 so interesting was that it was always a surprise when the alien revealed itself, but it looks like with the prequel they’re taking a less subtle route and making it a bit more in-your-face with the special effects. Now, I know that fan’s of the Carpenter movie will get up in arms when I say this, but I don’t think this movie looks that bad. Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead was a great movie (in my opinion, anyway), and even if you didn’t like it, George Romero’s film wasn’t going anywhere. Who’s to say that this Thing won’t be a fun little suspense film? And even if it sucks, how does that tarnish Carpenter’s Thing? If nothing else, it will hopefully get people interested in the Carpenter remake, and ain’t that a good Thing in the end?
The Thing came out in 1982, but now a different thing is coming out on October 14, 2011.
