Last year on this day, the mike got a bit of flack for choosing Stephen King over Bill Murray as the Celebrity Birthday boy, so today I have no choice but to select Murray lest I get the same venom levelled at me. Bill Murray has basically been a big star for his entire career – after only two roles, neither of which were credited, Murray became a cast member on Saturday Night Live and was an instant success. After SNL, it was like practically every movie Murray touched turned to gold, and he starred in smash hit after smash hit such as Meatballs, Stripes, Tootsie, Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, the highly underrated Quick Change, Groundhog Day, Kingpin, Ed Wood, and Charlie’s Angels. In the past decade, Murray has begun acting in less goofball roles, and has become a regular cast member in Wes Anderson films, including Rushmore, The Royal Tennenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Lost in Translation and has one of the greatest cameos of all time in (SPOILER ALERT) Zombieland. And that’s all just talking about his film and television career! Never mind the fact that he was good friends with Hunter Thompson and portrayed the Gonzo journalist in Where the Buffalo Roam, or that he was once arrested for trying to smuggle 9 pounds of marijuana onto a flight, or that he has, in recent years, taken to randomly crashing peoples’ parties for no good reason. Bill Murray is one of those actors who is just a living legend – there is none like him, and this pathetic little paragraph celebrating his birthday doesn’t even come close to doing him justice. He turns 61 today.
