Since we just recorded a Shouts From the Back Row podcast about Wes Anderson, it’s only appropriate that I showcase the original short film that got him started. In 1994, Anderson decided to make a 13-minute black-and-white short in his native Texas called Bottle Rocket and cast two brother friends of his, Owen and Luke Wilson, in the lead roles. He took the short to Sundance to get it screened, eventually secured the funding to turn Bottle Rocket into a feature-length film, and the careers of all three of these men soon took off. It’s funny to see the film open with the Wilson brothers having a discussion about Starsky & Hutch since Owen would eventually go on to star in the movie version of that show.
