Jemaine Clement (also known as the Hiphopopotamus) is a comedian, actor a musician from New Zealand who is probably best known for his work with Bret McKenzie on Flight of the Conchords. Clement studied drama and film at Victoria University of Wellington, where he met McKenzie, as well as Taika Cohen, whom he would form two comedy groups with: So You’re a Man and The Humourbeasts. After appearing as Flight of the Conchords in 2005 on HBO’s One Night Stand, the Conchords were offered their own 12-part HBO series, which was renewed for a second season. Clement has also appeared in a number of feature films, debuting in a New Zealand martial arts comedy called Tongan Ninja. He’s also played roles in Despicable Me, Rio and Dinner for Schmucks, though perhaps my favourite Clement role to date was in the film Gentlemen Broncos. Clement will also be appearing in the upcoming Men in Black III. He turns 38 today.
