I enjoyed director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel-quasi-remake of John Carpenter’s The Thing well enough, and yes, I realize that the film is hardly news at this point, but I recently stumbled upon this wicked little featurette about the practical effects used in the 2011 movie. Now, maybe it’s just because I’m a die-hard Carpenter fan and I didn’t want to give the prequel film much credit, maybe it’s because there was still a lot of CGI in the movie and it was distracting, but I didn’t realize just how awesome and elaborate some of the practical effects were in the 2011 The Thing. Looking at this montage of creature effects shots, I have a whole new respect for the movie. Man, I wish I could get some of these animatronic creations for Halloween.
