Levardis Burton, better known as LeVar Burton, is another example of a Star Trek: The Next Generation actor whose role on that show will always be his most famous. LeVar was initially intent on becoming a priest, and attended St. Pius X seminary school when he was thirteen. It was during his time at the University of Southern California that he decided to become an actor instead, and attended that university’s school of theatre. After a brief run as the host of the TV series Rebop, LeVar landed the role of Kunta Kinte/Toby on the series Roots and gained some acclaim for his performance. He would go on to play roles on other TV series including The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Murder, She Wrote, and Reading Rainbow before playing the part that made him famous: that of Lt.
