Just when I thought the bar for “Before They Were Stars” weirdness couldn’t be raised any higher, here’s a famous actor starting off his career as a tableau! The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting is a bizarre 1979 experimental French film about a narrator who walks through three-dimensional reproductions of famous paintings in order to explain their significance. In each case, the characters in the painting are played by actors who stand in tableau. At the 3:55 mark of this clip, you’ll see the “Marquis de E”, a guy with round glasses and a mustache who apparently has a weakness for young boys. Making his film debut as the Marquis is none other than Jean Reno!
