Billy Bob Thornton worked as a character actor in Hollywood for years before he shot to stardom with his iconic, Academy Award-nominated performance as Karl Childers in Sling Blade. However, Thornton had initially introduced the character two years beforehand when he wrote and starred in a 20-minute short called Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade. You’ll basically recognize this short as the first 20 minutes of Sling Blade since it features Karl in a mental hospital talking about the murders he committed. The feature film would continued Karl’s story by showing his life after he is released from the institution. J.T. Walsh plays a fellow patient here and would reprise his role in Sling Blade, and it’s amusing to see Molly Ringwald of all people playing the reporter who interviews Karl.
