Let me first start by saying that I love Chloe Grace-Moretz. She’s cute, she’s funny, she’s a talented actress, and she seems to enjoy off-beat, R-rated films. Unfortunately, she also seems to be the go-to girl for unnecessary remakes, having starred in the North American remake of Let the Right One In…and now she’s starring in the remake of Carrie. I’m not about to claim that I’m a die-hard fan of the original Brian De Palma movie, but I do think that it’s sort of perfect as it is. The time period, the cast, the raw look of the film stock, and the practical special effects all make it scary, but at the same time, the film is kept on a small scale. Plus, the ending has become iconic within the horror genre. This teaser for the remake is pretty blatantly showing us that there will be an over-reliance on CGI, the setting is going to be more modern, the film is going to look more polished, and it’s going to have a huge scale, basically encompassing the entire town. It looks processed, manufactured for a quick buck. But I just don’t think a big-budget remake of Carrie will work. Didn’t anyone learn anything from the atrocity that was The Rage: Carrie 2 from 1999? Sorry, Chloe. You rule, but you’re better than this.
Carrie comes out March 15, 2013.
