Celebrity Birthday of the Day – October 23

Writer/director Philip Kaufman has less than forty credits to his name in a career that began in 1964, but he’s clearly a man who values quality over quantity, because he’s responsible for some truly terrific movies! Kaufman’s first film Goldstein was his debut as a writer and director, and in the years that followed, Kaufman directed Fearless Frank, The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid, The White Dawn, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. He also wrote the films The Outlaw Josey Wales and helped develop the story for Raiders of the Lost Ark. Following Indiana Jones’ first outing, Kaufman went on to directed The Right Stuff, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Henry & June (inspired by Kaufman’s meeting Anais Nin during his travels), and Rising Sun. He took a seven year absence from filmmaking starting in 1993, and returned to directed Quills in 2000 and Twisted in 2004. Most recently, Kaufman directed an HBO film about Ernest Hemingway titled Hemingway & Gelhorn, starring Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman. The film was nominated for 15 Primetime Emmy Awards! Philip Kaufman turns 76 today, and thanks to him, I will forever have this terrifying image haunting my nightmares.
