You can’t repeat the past

Wow. Colour me impressed, folks. Baz Luhrmann looks to be once again delivering all the huge, sweeping spectacle of his previous efforts. Even if he is a bit glitter-dunked and hyperactive, he still knows how to appeal to the high school drama student in me. The Great Gatsby looks, well, great, and it’s fitting that the film would be just as opulent as its title character. The way that Luhrmann is applying modern sensibilities to the story, proving that the celebrity persona embodied by Gatsby still exists today, is also pretty smart (though rather on-the-nose), and Leonardo DiCaprio once again proves he’s a true movie star. Between this and Django Unchained, I’d call him the man of the hour.

The Great Gatsby comes out May 10, 2013.
