Roland Emmerich Has Done The Impossible

A Secret Service agent is tasked with saving the life of the President of the United States of America after the White House is overtaken by a paramilitary group.

Even though I’ve talked a lot on our podcast about how I don’t really have guilty pleasure movies. Any movie I like, I admit to liking, because I don’t feel like I should be ashamed of the films I enjoy and because I can also recognize when I like something stupid. But then I saw this trailer for White House Down. I enjoyed it. I know it’s really, really dumb. I know it stars Channing Tatum. I know that Roland Emmerich is a hack – he even touts his credits for movies like 2012. But damn it, I enjoyed watching this. It looks like mindless, overblown, action-y fun – like Die Hard meets a deadpan-serious version of Team America: World Police or something. I enjoyed it…and I felt bad for enjoying it. I almost didn’t write this confession because I genuinely felt guilty for liking something so…so…SILLY. Its title is even a parody of a serious military movie Black Hawk Down. What is wrong with me?!

White House Down comes out June 28, 2013. And I’m going to watch this at some point. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some weeping to do.
