300: Rise of an Empire has little to do with the number 300

The Greek general Themistocles battles an invading army of Persians under the mortal-turned-god, Xerxes.

I must say that I’ve always felt like 300 was a movie primed for a sequel. There are all kinds of cool historical battles that could be interpreted through the bronze-colour, ultra-slow-motion lens of Zack Snyder’s camera. But I don’t think I ever would have guessed that the director of Smart People – Noam Murro – would take on a project like this. It looks like he got the visual style right, but I dunno, there’s something that isn’t quite landing right in this trailer for 300: Rise of an Empire. Maybe it’s the fact that the number 300 hardly means anything in this context. I mean, where is David Wenham? Seems like if they were going to draw the 300 connection this blatantly, they’d at least make a point to include the 1 Spartan who survived.

300: Rise of an Empire comes out March 7, 2014.
