Animated movies are one of the rare arenas where sequels have a great track record, and I think Despicable Me 2 is going to be no exception to that rule. But let’s just pause a moment and reflect on how unlikely it is that this film (and its predecessor) works. Here’s a flick that’s so obviously built around making money – the 3D effects are apparent even in this brief featurette (I’m pretty sure Gru’s nose was made pointy solely for 3D), and the minions are clearly just a cash grab so that toys can be made out of them. And yet…I liked Despicable Me, and I get the sense that I’m going to like its sequel as well. How did they do that?!
