Did The Conjuring’s Marketing Just Jump The Shark?

While I wouldn’t say I was excited for The Conjuring, I was at least interested in it due to the involvement of James Wan, who directed Saw and Insidious, both horror films that I got a kick out of, and Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, both of whom have done some good work in horror flicks (see also Insidious and Orphan). However, this latest trailer’s inclusion of some talking head interviews with the “real” family from the story and all the emphasis that this is based on something true kinda put me off it a bit. I mean, I’m all for “based on a true story” horror movies, because the claim that they’re real can add to the thrills, but having interview footage like this immediately makes me think of The Fourth Kind, a crappy movie that didn’t know what style it wanted to be. Anyway, my fingers are crossed that this will still be full of decent scares, but I sure hope this trailer is the only time they pull a stunt like this.

The Conjuring comes out July 19, 2013.
