Prisoners Looks Good, But It’d Better Be Smarter Than I Think It Will Be

A Boston man kidnaps the person he suspects is behind the disappearance of his young daughter and her best friend.

Whoa! Where did this come from? I hadn’t heard of the film Prisoners until yesterday, and this trailer makes the movie look pretty gripping! First impressions were strong, and I got a bit excited to see a neat new movie trailer – it’s been a while since I saw a preview for something new that looked solid. But after thinking about it, there are two things that kind of stuck out to me, and I’d better be wrong on both counts. First off, Terrence Howard had better serve kind of a purpose in this movie…other than being the kidnapper. Seriously, he’s this secondary character, and he doesn’t seem to contribute a thing to the plot. According to the law of the economy of characters, he’s gotta be behind the abduction. Second, Jake Gyllenhaal had better not be the kidnapper either, because his name is Detective Loki – it’s even spelled that way – and Loki is a trickster god, as any fan of Norse mythology or Marvel movies knows. If either of these things turns out to be the case, I’ll be sorely unimpressed.

Prisoners comes out September 20, 2013.
