The Robocop remake is filed under “Likely to suck” in my folder of upcoming movies, but it’s also a case where I feel like I should keep posting the trailers, just in case it turns out to be mind-blowingly and unexpectedly cool. There are a number of things that I like about the ideas at work here. Giving Robocop a single human hand so he can shakes peoples’ hands like some kind of PR machine is actually pretty clever, and what with automated drone warfare and all those other robot-related things present in modern society, it does make sense to take another look at the now less far-fetched ideas in the original Paul Verhoeven movie. But there’s also a very good chance that this will be dumbed down and sanitized beyond recognition. Somehow, I don’t think this version will see Robocop shoot a rapist in the balls.
Robocop comes out February 7, 2014.
