2014 got off to a bit of a sad start with the announcement that James Avery, a.k.a. Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, passed away on New Year’s Eve at the age of 65. While he’s best known for Fresh Prince, Avery also did a lot of voice acting for animated series, most memorably as the Shredder on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Avery voiced the Junkyard Dog on Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling, a Saturday morning series from the 1980s which featured cartoon versions of the era’s most popular WWF superstars. If you want, you can first hear Avery’s voice by skipping to the 2:08 mark of this clip, but since that would involve skipping a segment where Bobby “The Brain” Heenan offers weightlifting tips, I’d advise against it.
