Before They Were Stars: Weird Al Yankovic’s First Music Video

Okay, this “music video” is really nothing more than a few different camera angles of 19-year old Weird Al Yankovic sitting in an empty room playing an accordion, but it’s still history in the making. In 1979, Weird Al was an architecture student at Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo when he decided to record “My Bologna”, a parody of The Knack’s “My Sharona”, which was a huge hit song at the time. When it played on the Dr. Demento radio show, the lead singer from The Knack liked it so much that he actually convinced Capitol Records to release the song as a single. This pretty much convinced Weird Al Yankovic to abandon his plans for a future in architecture and pursue a career in music, and the world is a much better place for it.
