I was 11 years old when Jim Carrey had his massive breakout year in 1994, and considering how the three big hits he had that year were Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, I’m sure it’s no mystery as to how 11 year old Gill was immediately turned into a Jim Carrey fan. Carrey’s presence in films has been pretty sparse in recent years, so I was pretty interested when I heard that now, 20 years after the first movie, he was reuniting with Jeff Daniels to make a new Dumb and Dumber movie. Unfortunately, now that I’ve seen the trailer, I’m much less interested. Dumb and Dumber To looks to me like the Farrelly brothers comedy equivalent of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – a cash grab where the actors have all visibly aged and are clearly trying (and failing) to recapture the fun of the original. It looks dumb, and not in the good way. I think I’ll be waiting for this to hit Netflix before I watch it.
