I severely disliked Star Trek Into Darkness to the point where it’s often one of my go-to examples of disappointing sequels from recent years, but I still enjoyed 2009’s Star Trek enough that I was curious as to what they were going to do with the series’ third installment: Star Trek Beyond. Unfortunately, this trailer has sucked away any immediate enthusiasm that I had for the film, because man, this looks dumb. And I wanted to like this one, too, since Simon Pegg is writing it; he wrote Shaun of the Dead! But no, this just looks like The Fast and the Furious in space (appropriate, considering Justin Lin is directing), and doesn’t resemble Star Trek in any way. See, I’ve always found the appeal of Star Trek to be its focus on exploration and the future. It was supposed to be Horatio Hornblower in space. Not so Star Trek Beyond. Still, this could just be a bad trailer. Time will tell, I guess.
