This is a cool video that points to a few examples of movies changing aspect ratios midway through, but I wonder how long this trend has actually been going on. Was The Wizard of Oz the first film to do this? I’ve been noticing more and more that IMAX 3D movies have been using false aspect ratios to make stuff seem to pop out of the edges of the screen at the audience.
