Sunday Short Reviews

Every Sunday, Gill delves into his archive of over 800 movie reviews and randomly selects three for your enjoyment! Here are this week’s…

I Am Legend
The first hour of I Am Legend is awesome. It’s gripping, suspenseful and chilling enough to give you nightmares. Will Smith does an admirable job of holding your attention, even though it’s just him, a german shepherd and some mannequins on screen. Unfortunately, the movie goes downhill somewhere around the one-hour mark. With some better monsters and a reworking of the ending, this movie could have been the next 28 Days Later.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
At the time of this writing, I haven’t read past book four of the Harry Potter series, and so I was interested in seeing just how much sense the movie would make to me without prior knowledge of the source material. The result: I was pleasantly surprised and could pretty well follow the plot all the way through. There were a few bits that I could tell were just subplots from the book that the filmmakers felt obligated to include, but they didn’t inhibit the story at all, and overall I enjoyed the film. Finally, I saw this in IMAX, and the last twenty minutes were in 3D. Unfortunately, the 3D was horrible and makes it impossible to tell what is going on. So yeah…avoid it in IMAX.

The Cat in the Hat
Words cannot describe how inane and stupid this movie really is.
