Clint Eastwood Confirms My Suspicions

Not too long ago, I speculated as to whether Joaquin Phoenix’s bizarre choice to make a piece of performance art about him going nuts and trying to become a rap star would have a lasting effect on his career. Seems like I was right, as Clint Eastwood indicated in a recent interview that, although rumours have been circulating that the director was going to tap Phoenix to play J. Edgar Hoover in an upcoming movie, he has no interesting in casting the actor. The interview with Reuters focuses primarily on the Hoover movie, and not so much on the rumours about Joaquin Phoenix being cast, but the most significant quote from Clint (to me) was his reponse to the question of whether Phoenix would be headlining the film:

“No. I don’t know where that came from. Didn’t he become a rapper?”

Y’see, Joaquin? It’s all well and good to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes, but you spent so long doing it that there are still plenty of people out there who don’t realize it was all a sham.

Makes me wonder what the next movie we’ll see Phoenix in will be. Will his career, like the phoenix, be reborn from the ashes of his “downfall”? Or will everyone just continue to think that’s he’s a total nut?
