Reports are pouring in from all over that the villains of Christopher Nolan’s third (and most likely final) Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises have been announced at long last! A press release from Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. names Catwoman and Bane – to be played by Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy – as the foes the Dark Knight will face in the concluding chapter to Nolan’s trilogy. Here’s the official statement:

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story,” says Nolan, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Now, some people might be skeptical about the casting of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, but as Robin said to me: everyone was skeptical when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker. I think Nolan has earned our trust by now, don’t you? But the really awesome announcement is that Bane is not only in the film, but he’s being played by Tom Hardy, who was definitely one of the best things about Nolan’s last movie Inception.

This piece of news is a real treat to nerds like us at the Back Row. After years, YEARS of speculation, we’ve finally got the answer as to who Batman is going to face off against. I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

The Dark Knight Rises comes out July 20, 2012.
