Swedish wrestler Karl Oscar Tore Johansson, better known as Tor Johnson and billed as the Super Swedish Angel, spent most of his life in the ring before he began a short film career, performing bit parts as bodybuilders and strongmen in various movies. It was Ed Wood, king of terrible movies, who thrust Tor into the limelight when he cast the wrestler as Inspector Daniel Clay in Plan 9 From Outer Space. Since that role, Tor has become a horror icon to fans of the genre, and, as the final titles of Tim Burton’s film Ed Wood correctly state, to this day, Tor’s image is still used as a best-selling Halloween mask. Tor died of heart failure in 1971 at the age of 67.
