Before They Were Stars: Sharon Stone in “Deadly Blessing”

Made in 1981, Deadly Blessing is one of the lesser known titles in horror legend Wes Craven’s filmography… not to mention one of the weirdest! No doubt inspired by Craven’s strict upbringing in a fundamentalist religious household, the film takes place in an Amish community where a series of murders are taking place that may be the work of a demonic incubus. Deadly Blessing earned Ernest Borgnine his only career Razzie nomination for his campy performance as a religious fanatic, and also happened to be the second film role of Sharon Stone’s career. The film is all over the map, but does have its moments, particularly this creepy nightmare sequence where a spider drops down into Stone’s mouth! Gee, maybe this Craven guy should make an entire film about nightmares someday…
