Sunday Short Reviews

Every Sunday, Gill delves into his archive of over 800 movie reviews and randomly selects three for your enjoyment! Here are this week’s…

Big Trouble
I consider this to be a highly underrated comedy. Based on a novel by the always witty Dave Barry, this movie features a surprisingly star-studded cast (including, but not limited to Tim Allen, Rene Russo, Stanley Tucci, Zooey Deschanel, Tom Sizemore, Janeane Garofolo, Patrick Warburton, and Jason Lee) and at just over 80 minutes, it’s a short, sweet, laugh-a-minute ride. Big Trouble had the unfortunate luck to come out right around 9/11 when it features a bomb on a plane as a plot point, and as such has been overlooked for years. But trust me when I say, you won’t regret looking into this movie.

Piranha
Piranha is good, old-fashioned b-movie fun, and it has no pretenses about being anything other than an excuse to show some boobs and a whole lot of gore. And boy, there are boobs and guts aplenty. In addition to its self-winking camp, Piranha also has some appeal in its stars – a number of name actors who we haven’t seen in blockbuster movies in some time, including Richard Dreyfuss and Christopher Lloyd! Fans of grindhouse horror will love this remake.

The A-Team
I enjoyed The A-Team for the duration of its running time, but basically forgot all about it by the next day. The action is pretty good, if not utterly ludicrous, and the characters are likeable enough that you stay with the film while it’s on, but as I said, it ultimately fails to make much of an impression. I should note that I actually really liked District 9‘s Sharlto Copley as Howling Mad Murdock. Unfortunately, Quentin “Rampage” Jackson is no Mr. T.
