Phone Book Friction

I love me some Mythbusters, even if they occasionally shoot a cannonball through my house, and this is one myth that really amazed me. As it turns out, if you interweave the pages of two phone books, it’s near impossible to get them apart! And by near impossible, I mean that they can only be ripped apart when around 8,000 pounds of force is exerted upon them – enough to hang two cars from! I’d attempt to explain why it works, but I think I’ll leave that part up to the experts:
