Rise of the Guardians has nothing to do with owls

Even though I know better, I can’t help but associate Rise of the Guardians with Zack Snyder’s animated owl film Legend of the Guardians from a couple of years ago. Maybe it’s just the tempo of the title, maybe it’s the inclusion of the word “Guardians”…maybe it’s the fact that Rise of the Guardians would be the perfect name for a sequel to Legend of the Guardians, but whatever the case, it’s going to be a while before I can fully disassociate the two films in my mind. Anyway, Rise of the Guardians couldn’t be more different than Legend of the Guardians in terms of plot:

Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman, and Jack Frost are legendary characters with previously unknown extraordinary abilities. When an evil spirit known as Pitch lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children everywhere.

Could be interesting, could be interesting. Talk about built-in brand recognition, though! Turning characters like Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy into a team of crimefighters is a pretty brilliant idea when it comes to marketing. As for this trailer, I think the film looks like a fun time, and I like the kinda Russian viking Santa thing they have going on. Plus, Hugh Jackman voices a rabbit. It’s almost too perfect.

Rise of the Guardians comes out November 21, 2012.
