Since we just did a Shouts From the Back Row podcast on Monty Python, I think it’s only appropriate that some members of the Python troupe finally get the “Before They Were Stars” treatment. Right before they aligned themselves with the other Python cast members to make Flying Circus, Michael Palin and Terry Jones teamed together to create a comedy series called The Complete and Utter History of Britain, which was based around the idea of recreating historical events if they had taken place when television was invented. The show only lasted six episodes and all of its footage was thought to have been lost for several decades until the first two episodes were unearthed in 2006. Apparently, Terry Jones absolutely cringed when he went back and watched the footage, but The Complete and Utter History in Britain provides an interesting historical look at Python cast members experimenting with a style of humour that would soon change the face of comedy.
