Whatever happened to Phoebe Cates? After turning an entire generation of boys into men with her famous scene from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Cates only appeared in a handful of projects before disappearing from acting entirely around the late 1990s. Cates began her career as a model, but at the age of 17 decided to pursue acting instead, and she made her film debut the same year as Fast Times at Ridgemont High in the Blue Lagoon ripoff Paradise. Following Ridgemont High, Cates appeared in both Gremlins movies and in Drop Dead Fred, after which point she just dropped off the map. Aside from a role in the 2001 film The Anniversary Party, Cates hasn’t appeared in anything. According to Wikipedia, Cates opened her own boutique in New York City in 2005. Funny to think that she is now overseeing a retail business, and yet at the same time was at the centre of one of the most iconic scenes of any 80s movie. Phoebe Cates turns 50 today.
