Before They Were Stars: Marisa Tomei as Cinderella on “As the World Turns”

During the mid-1980s, As the World Turns was completely unaware they had struck gold by having two future Academy Award winners in their cast, as both Marisa Tomei and Julianne Moore started off their careers by playing recurring characters on the famous soap opera. I’ve already posted clips of some of their scenes together, but I think I need to post another one for its sheer bizarreness. In this scene, Tomei’s character fantasizes that she’s Cinderella and is visited by her fairy godmother… who is played by the famous comedian, Phyllis Diller! Yes, clearly the recent Kenneth Branagh version of Cinderella needed less Helena Bonham Carter and more Phyllis Diller.
