Before They Were Stars: 17-Year Old David Bowie Plugs “The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men”

As I’m sure you’re aware, David Bowie tragically passed away yesterday, so I think it’s only fitting to do a re-post of what I consider to be one of the greatest “Before They Were Stars” clips The Back Row has ever uncovered. How could a man like this not be destined for greatness? R.I.P.

The preceding clip probably looks like a Monty Python sketch, but I swear to God, it’s 100 % legitimate. Back in 1964, David Bowie was just a rebellious 17-year old named David Jones who decided to form an organization called “The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men”. At the time, it was still considered socially unacceptable for men to have long hair and the future Bowie wanted to stop this persecution. I know this sounds like a big joke and a 1964 form of trolling, but Bowie and his followers actually got airtime on the respected BBC current affairs program, Tonight.
