Last Link of the Day: Inappropriate Smiling During a Dramatic Scene

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who’s ever noticed this, as one thing has always bugged me about the famous opening sequence in Cliffhanger where Sylvester Stallone drops a woman to her death. Even though this is a super-intense, sad and serious scene, pay close attention to Ralph Waite, the elderly actor playing Frank. For whatever reason, Frank’s got this big, wide-eyed, evil-looking smile on his face throughout the whole scene, and almost looks like he’s LAUGHING when the poor woman plummets to her doom! Maybe old Ralph Waite got a little senile and forgot he wasn’t making a comedy.
